THE FINAL SKULL HAS BEEN FOUND. NOW ALL HELL'S BREAKING LOOSE.

For two thousand years, the Triarii have protected us, influencing history from the Crusades to the discovery of America. Descending from the Roman Empire, they pervade every level of society, and are now in a race with our own government to retrieve an ancient artifact thought to have been lost forever.

Caught in the middle is Archaeology Professor James Acton, relentlessly hunted by the elite Delta Force, under orders to stop at nothing to possess what he has found, and the Triarii, equally determined to prevent the discovery from falling into the wrong hands.

With his students and friends dying around him, Acton flees to find the one person who might be able to help him, but little does he know he may actually be racing directly into the hands of an organization he knows nothing about.

From USA TODAY and million copy bestselling author J. Robert Kennedy, comes The Protocol, the first entry in an action-packed globe-spanning series of thrillers certain to leave you breathless. If you enjoy fast-paced adventures in the style of Dan Brown, Clive Cussler, and James Rollins, then you’ll love this taut tale of archaeological suspense.

“The Protocol” starts of at a frenetic pace for 3-4 pages in the 13th century then changes to current day in one town for the same 3-4 pages before jumping to another scene. On and an on, the book continues like this for 320 pages and 94 chapters with so many characters you’ll need a score card to keep track of who’s done what to whom, are they good or bad and where the heck are we now?!?!? It was exhausting.

Equally jarring was the foul language. I’m no prude, but this language was way beyond appropriate for the characters, setting or storyline. Trying to earn shock value or street cred with disgusting language is simple a cheap ploy and lazy, imho. Find a thesaurus Mr. Kennedy, please?

In complete contrast to the gratuitous verbiage, the violence in this fast paced, well crafted adventure story was NOT over descriptive, gory or offensive in any way. The plot was interesting with a bit of an historical twist that snaked into an international political romp. It was a bit contrived at times, but moved along without filler and fodder.

The characters and dialogue were ok, save all the profanity. You won’t be highlighting any passages to save for your inspiration diary from this tale...They did speak realistically and advance the story at a reasonable pace. Thankfully, there weren’t any attempts at grandstand speeches. There was no sexual content to speak of.

If you’re into fast paced action that doesn’t require much tho’t and aren’t offended by nonsensical profanity, you’ll enjoy “The Protocol”.

The Protocol A James Acton Thriller Book #1 James Acton Thrillers edition by J Robert Kennedy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The problem with most of the action thrillers? The authors with the highest name recognition get bloated with ego.

I read, and loved, "The Hunt for Red October" before anyone knew who Tom Clancy was. What can I say? I'm a chick who likes military ordinance.

This book echoes that one, for me - a hero suddenly drawn in over his head. The writing is clean, fresh, with historic flashbacks that gave a Clive Cussler twist which hooked me. Oh, and for Dan Brown fans? There's a secret society.

I gave up on Mr. Clancy's writing long before his death, and Mr.Brown's latest works only get an eye roll from me.

EGO.

I prefer the writing of working authors with lower name recognition and - like Mr. Kennedy - a better grasp of narrative, SPAG and language skills, and editing that keeps the plot moving. No wasted words here.

I have high hopes of the James Acton series becoming a favourite. Bought the of "Brass Monkey" the instant I finished "The Protocol".
I very much liked this book. I'm glad I read it. It's a guy book and my wife wouldn't touch it. Pure testosterone.

I admit to being a big Indianna Jones fan. If you don't like Indy I don't think you would like Protocol.

There are a lot of characters in Protocol and it jumps around between ancient and present time. That took some getting use to, but the way the present story line was developed from the historical side made it worthwhile. It's really a matter of getting use to the rhythm of the book. (I have since read others and found them easier because my brain got the directions and I knew what to do.)

It moves fast with a lot of adventure and locations that kept me going and put me in a "Just one more chapter" frame of mind. It is not held up with lot of dialogue, which is pretty amazing considering the historical side. You get the information you need in bits and pieces as the story develops without getting bored by the facts.

One of the multiple "groups" that come into play in the book is a secret US black ops group. This made for a lot high teck stuff that was fun, but a lot of killing of inocents that wasn't. In fact that is why I only gave it 4 stars. There is defenitly a "good guys" dark side present that I found disturbing.

So would iread another of his books in the series? Yeah, Amason got me and I bought the next 3 in the box. I finished the firs two and am starting the third. So I guess I would. After I am finished with that I'll be looking for a change if pace. But for now its a lot of fun.
Absolutely breathtaking story! I love that the premise for this story has one foot firmly grounded in the fact that Crystal Skulls do indeed exist. And, that they're also incredible feats of technology, artwork, and limitless possibilities, of potentially alien creation and orientation. The purpose of these skulls around the world continue to taunt us with their hidden secrets and the intentions for their use; however, this story seems incredibly plausible given what little we know about these mysterious and mesmerizing objects.

An "Acton Adventure," is sort of like a modern day mashup of "James Bond," realistic Black Ops missions and objectives, paired up with "Indiana Jones," modern day technology and archeology, and enough excitement and tension to keep you sitting on the edge of your seat on pins and needles, right up until the very end! It has everything, science, action, history, and adventure, and exciting, cutting-edge, modern day warfare. I won't throw out any spoilers, except to say that this book brought everything it promised, to the "party," and then some! Despite there being a multitude of characters, each person had their own thoughts, ideas, flaws, and personalities, and I didn't need a "cheat sheet," at the beginning of this book to keep them separated in my imagination and know who was who. They were all delightfully "alive," and each one was truly and uniquely individual. Nicely done! Well-created locations, characters, details, moods, feelings, world-building, etcetera.

Pull up a chair, grab a book, and dive right in... this story is waiting for you-- in fact, the entire book is "picture perfect," and I'll be surprised if it doesn't get made into a movie sometime soon! Thank you, J. Robert Kennedy, for an extraordinary journey! It just doesn't get any better than this, and I had a marvelous time! Kudos!!!
